Senate to vote on amendment bills today; new judges take oath
The Senate is set to convene at 10:30 AM today with a packed agenda, dominated by major defense-related legislation. According to the released agenda, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif will present three amendment bills for approval; The Army Act Amendment Bill, The Pakistan Air Force Act Amendment Bill, The Pakistan Navy Ordinance Amendment Bill
These bills were passed by the National Assembly yesterday. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to coalition partners for their support during the legislative process.
Under the proposed amendments: the Army Chief and Chief of Defense will have the authority to restructure and merge all branches of the Pakistan Army; the Prime Minister will appoint the Commander National Strategic Command based on the joint recommendation of the Army Chief and Chief of Defense; the Commander will serve a three-year tenure, with the option of one three-year reappointment; and the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee is set to be abolished from November 27.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar will present the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill for Senate approval as well.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the oath-taking of the newly formed Federal Constitutional Court judges. The judges will take their oath at the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Prior to this, Chief of the Constitutional Court Justice Aminuddin will take his oath at the President House, administered by President Asif Ali Zardari.
Arrangements have been finalised in the open area between the IHC judges’ block and the Admin Block for the ceremony involving Justice Aminuddin and other judges. The oath-taking is expected to take place at 11:00 AM.
