Senate Committee Pushes for Tougher Penalties on Rape Crimes
Senate Committee on Interior Reviews Amendment for Stricter Punishments in Rape Cases
During a meeting chaired by Senator Faisal Salim, the Senate Committee on Interior discussed a proposed amendment to increase penalties for rape offenses.
Senator Mohsin Aziz introduced the amendment, stressing the necessity for more severe punishments. “Current penalties for rape are insufficient; we must enforce harsher consequences,” he argued, advocating for life imprisonment for those convicted of rape.
Senator Samina Zehri also supported the proposal, calling for a revision of outdated legislation. “We are still operating under laws from 50 years ago that need updating,” she remarked.
Further emphasizing the need for reform, Senator Aziz recommended a minimum sentence of 25 years for rape offenses, highlighting the committee’s commitment to establishing stricter measures to combat these crimes.
