Second Congo Virus Death Reported in Karachi, Raising Public Health Concerns
This marks the second confirmed Congo virus-related fatality in Karachi in recent weeks.
Karachi — A second death linked to the Congo virus has been confirmed in Karachi, intensifying concerns over the potential spread of the deadly disease in the metropolitan area.
The latest victim, a 26-year-old resident of Ibrahim Hyderi, succumbed to the virus after being admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital. According to Dr. Abdul Waheed, the patient arrived at the facility with a high-grade fever and symptoms of internal bleeding — both hallmark signs of the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).
This marks the second confirmed Congo virus-related fatality in Karachi in recent weeks. Health authorities are now on high alert, urging residents to take strict precautions, especially when handling livestock or visiting areas known to be at risk.
“The Congo virus is typically transmitted through ticks found on animals or via direct contact with infected blood or bodily fluids,” said Dr. Waheed. “We strongly advise people to use protective clothing and avoid unnecessary contact with animals.”
With Eid-ul-Azha approaching — a period marked by increased animal handling and movement — medical experts warn that the risk of transmission could rise if preventive steps are not followed diligently.
The Sindh Health Department has announced plans to enhance surveillance and public awareness campaigns across the city. Citizens are encouraged to report any symptoms, such as sudden fever, muscle pain, dizziness, or unexplained bleeding, to the nearest healthcare facility without delay.
