Islamabad: SC says criticism by UK High Commissioner on bat decision ‘unjustified’. The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed British High Commissioner Jane Marriott’s criticism of the court’s decision regarding the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party’s “bat” election symbol as ‘unjustified’.
In a letter written by the Registrar of the Supreme Court on the instructions of the Chief Justice of Pakistan , the court responded to remakrs made by Marriott at the Asma Jehangir conference.
The court stated that all decisions made by the Supreme Court of Pakistan are within the framework of the country’s constitution and law. The decision concerning the PTI’s “bat” symbol was also made in accordance with the constitution and law, and therefore, any criticism regarding it is unjustified.
The letter added that the decision to take awy the symbol was based on the fact that the party did not hold intra-party elections despite the law requiring them.
Referring to the need for acknwledging past mistakes, the letter als referred to the overthrow of the Mossadegh government in Iran as well as the Balfour Declaration.
However, the letter added that the SC has itself acknowledged and addressed the mistakes it made in the past, in an effort to prevent them from being repeated.
It went on to say that if the Commissioner has criticised the Supreme Court’s decision and called for an ‘open society’ then it should recirporcate as well.
The letter also added tha copies may be delivered to the presdient and lady chief justice of England.
