Saudi Arabia Warns Hajj Pilgrims of Scorching Temperatures
Expect High Temperatures During This Year’s Hajj, Saudi Officials Caution
Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has announced that pilgrims participating in this year’s Hajj can anticipate scorching temperatures during their religious journey.
The national meteorology centre predicts an average maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit) in Makkah and Medina. This forecast reflects an increase of one and a half to two degrees above the usual norms.
The Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is a mandatory pilgrimage for all financially capable Muslims. It spans four days and involves a series of sacred rituals performed in Makkah and its surroundings.
Last year, over 1.8 million Muslims participated in the Hajj.
In 2023, extreme heat led to more than 2,000 cases of heat stress among pilgrims. However, the actual number of affected individuals may have been higher, as not all sought medical attention.
Saudi authorities take steps to alleviate the effects of heat on pilgrims. These measures include providing air-conditioned tents and misting systems.
Ayman Ghulam, the head of the meteorology centre, emphasised the importance of adequate hydration. He stressed the need for sufficient water to cover daily consumption as temperatures rise.
