Pakistan Observes World Environment Day with Emphasis on Land Restoration

Pakistan faces significant environmental challenges, including land degradation, desertification, and drought.

ISLAMABAD, (Saeed Ahmad): Pakistan today joined the global community in observing World Environment Day, with a focus on the theme “Land Restoration, Stopping Desertification and Building Drought Resilience.” The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the country’s natural resources and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The day began with a series of events and activities across the country, including tree planting drives, clean-up campaigns, and seminars on sustainable land management. The Ministry of Climate Change, in collaboration with various environmental organizations, organized a national conference to discuss the challenges and opportunities in land restoration and desertification control.

Pakistan faces significant environmental challenges, including land degradation, desertification, and drought. The country has lost a significant portion of its arable land due to soil erosion, deforestation, and unsustainable agricultural practices. Desertification, which is the degradation of arid and semi-arid lands, has also become a major concern, affecting the livelihoods of millions of people.

To address these issues, the government has launched several initiatives, including the National Desertification Control Program and the Pakistan Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) Strategy. These programs aim to promote sustainable land management practices, restore degraded lands, and enhance the resilience of ecosystems to climate change.
