Saudi Arabia introduces its first hydrogen-powered buses

This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which focuses on enhancing the quality of life and promoting sustainable technologies.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has made a significant step toward sustainable transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered bus. The trial service, inaugurated by Prince Saud bin Talal bin Badr, Governor of Al-Ahsa, demonstrates the Kingdom’s commitment to eco-friendly and innovative transport solutions.

The hydrogen-powered bus can travel up to 635 kilometers on a full tank and seats 45 passengers. It will operate daily between Dammam and Al-Ahsa, covering 359 kilometers. SAT Company manages the service in the Southern Concession Area as part of intercity transportation services.

During the inauguration, an introductory video highlighted the bus’s features, including its fueling process, safety measures, and environmental benefits. Prince Saud, with other dignitaries such as Dr. Rumaih bin Mohammed Al-Rumaih, Acting Chairman of the General Transport Authority, participated in a test run to showcase the bus’s performance.

This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which focuses on enhancing the quality of life and promoting sustainable technologies. Prince Saud emphasized Al-Ahsa’s leading role in adopting innovative solutions that improve transportation and reduce carbon emissions.

Dr. Rumaih stated that this trial reflects the General Transport Authority’s commitment to integrating advanced technologies and promoting sustainable practices. These efforts aim to reduce carbon emissions and improve Saudi Arabia’s competitiveness in the regional and global transport sectors, in line with the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services.
