Sardar Akhtar Mengal Rejects Secret Constitutional Amendments
Webdesk-Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal) Chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal firmly opposed the proposed constitutional amendments being discussed in secret on Saturday, asserting his refusal to engage in any forced changes.
After meeting with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in Islamabad, Mengal expressed his concerns about the current political environment, stating, “Negotiations cannot proceed until our missing members of parliament are returned.”
He emphasized that the prevailing conditions are not suitable for negotiations, especially when threats overshadow political discussions.
Mengal criticized the government’s approach to the amendments, claiming, “Constitutional changes are being introduced in a hidden manner, raising doubts about who is truly behind these proposals.”
He highlighted the absurdity of needing sudden amendments after 51 years since the 1973 Constitution was enacted, questioning, “What kind of emergency warrants such secretive changes?”
During a press conference in Islamabad following the meeting, Mengal expressed frustration over the ongoing state of emergency and criticized the government’s narrow focus on constitutional amendments while neglecting pressing issues affecting citizens. “The constitution is not a secret document; it should be transparent and accessible to every citizen,” he asserted.
Mengal further condemned the current administration for attempting to obscure the content of the amendments, suggesting that the ruling class is reluctant to disclose them to the public.
“Political parties and their members have the right to know about the constitution under which they are governed,” he added.
He also highlighted alarming tactics reportedly used by the government, condemning the harassment and abduction of party members. “Is this how democracy operates? Such actions have no place in a democratic society.”
Mengal questioned whether the amendments originate from the government, its allies, or from factions traditionally opposed to the constitution, labeling their actions as threats to democratic values.
