Sabalenka storms into US Open final after stunning victory today

Sabalenka aims for back-to-back US Open titles as Anisimova seeks her first Grand Slam victory.

US – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – Reigning champion and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is back in the US Open final for the third straight year. The 27-year-old Belarusian battled past Jessica Pegula with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win on Thursday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. She is now aiming to become the first player since Serena Williams in 2014 to defend the US Open crown.

Sabalenka described the match as “really tough,” praising Pegula’s incredible tennis. “I had to work very hard to get this win,” she said. “I’m super happy to be back in the final and hope I can go all the way again.”

The top seed has reached four of the last five Grand Slam finals but has not added to her three major titles since winning the 2024 US Open. Earlier this year, she finished runner-up at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros. “I wanted another chance to prove myself. I’ve learned from tough finals and want to do better this time,” Sabalenka added.

In the semifinal, Pegula took the opening set 6-4 after breaking Sabalenka at a crucial moment. The Belarusian, however, regrouped strongly in the second set, breaking early to level the match. In the decider, Sabalenka’s powerful baseline play earned her a key break, and she sealed victory on her third match point with a blistering forehand winner.

American star Amanda Anisimova secured her spot in the final after a dramatic comeback win over Naomi Osaka, defeating her 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 in a match that finished past midnight in New York. It will be Anisimova’s second consecutive Grand Slam final, and she will now face Sabalenka in a rematch of their Wimbledon semi-final.

“I wasn’t sure I would make it past the finish line, but I kept fighting. This means the world to me,” Anisimova said. “It’s a dream come true. I hope I can take the title.”

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, showed signs of her best form, winning the first set in a tie-break. However, Anisimova fought back, dominating the second-set tie-break and carrying her momentum into the deciding set. She broke Osaka early and maintained control, closing out the match on her third match point.

The US Open final on Saturday promises an intense battle as Sabalenka looks to defend her crown, while Anisimova chases her first Grand Slam title.
