Gulf States Left Frustrated as Key Shipping Route Remains Blocked

Russia and China blocked a United Nations Security Council resolution on Tuesday that aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal had already been watered down from what Gulf nations originally hoped for — they had wanted clear permission to use military force to safeguard this critical waterway that keeps global shipping moving.

The draft resolution prepared by Bahrain and supported by the United States received 11 votes in favor, two against and two abstentions.

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani said Gulf states “regret” the rejection of the measure.
