Rubio tells G7 allies it’s in their interest to reopen Hormuz

Rubio heads to Paris as G7 allies push for a peaceful end to the Iran crisis

US Secretary – (Web Desk) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on Thursday about the Strait of Hormuz. He said every G7 country has a reason to push for its reopening. Iran has been blocking the strait and it is hurting the global economy badly.

“It’s in their interest to help,” Rubio said. He was about to fly to France to join a G7 foreign ministers meeting near Paris on Friday.

This is Rubio’s first overseas trip since the US and Israel struck Iran with airstrikes on February 28. He skipped the first day of G7 talks but still gave reporters an update.

Rubio said talks with Iran are moving forward. He wouldn’t say when or how they might wrap up though. “There are countries in the middle passing messages and progress has been made,” he said. He called it an ongoing process.

The other G7 members, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, all spoke up on Thursday too. They said they want a peaceful and diplomatic way out of this situation. The near shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz has already shaken markets and supply chains around the world.

US President Donald Trump said earlier Thursday at a cabinet meeting that Tehran was more keen to make a deal than he was, noting that the military operation was ahead of schedule and reiterating his criticism of NATO.

At the same meeting, Rubio said Washington’s allies should be grateful to Trump for undertaking the offensive, led in coordination with Israel.

“The president is not just doing a favor to the United States and to our people. This is for the world,” Rubio said.

France currently holds the rotating presidency of the G7.
