Rs0.70 Per Unit Relief for Consumers Announced by CPPA-G

Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal): Consumers are set to benefit from a Rs0.70 per unit reduction in their electricity bills for September 2024, thanks to a fuel charge adjustment (FCA). The Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guaranteed (CPPA-G) has suggested a negative FCA adjustment of Rs0.70 per unit for Distribution Companies (Discos) for that month, which could lead to an overall refund of approximately Rs8.55 billion to electricity consumers.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will hold a public hearing on October 30, 2024, to consider CPPA-G’s proposal for adjusting Disco tariffs.

According to data submitted to NEPRA, hydropower generation made up 38.75% of the total electricity produced between May and September 2024, delivering 4,838 GWh. Local coal-fired plants generated 1,261 GWh (10.10%) at a cost of Rs12.2882 per unit, while imported coal accounted for 1,149 GWh (9.20%) at Rs16.5990 per unit. No electricity was generated from High-Speed Diesel (HSD), and 39 GWh was produced from Residual Fuel Oil (RFO) at a cost of Rs30.2960 per unit.

Gas-powered plants generated 988 GWh (7.91%) at a cost of Rs13.6768 per unit, while Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) contributed 2,039 GWh (16.33%) at Rs24.9570 per unit. Nuclear energy produced 1,596 GWh (12.78%) at a significantly lower cost of Rs1.5417 per unit, while 40 GWh of electricity was imported from Iran at a rate of Rs25.9519 per unit.

Renewable energy sources also contributed to the total generation for September 2024, with wind energy providing 395 GWh (3.17%) and solar energy adding 105 GWh (0.84%). In total, 12,487 GWh of electricity was generated at an average cost of Rs8.3380 per unit, amounting to Rs104.114 billion. After factoring in a previous adjustment of Rs7.505 billion and a negative sale of Rs1.402 billion from Independent Power Producers (IPPs), the net electricity supplied to Discos in September 2024 was 12,118 GWh, at a rate of Rs9.0949 per unit, with a total cost of Rs110.05 billion.
