Rohit Sharma’s Test Future in Doubt, Says Former Skipper Srikkanth
India-(Sports Reporter): India needs to start considering a successor for Rohit Sharma if the team does not perform well in their upcoming five-test series in Australia, as the captain may retire from test cricket, according to former skipper Krishnamachari Srikkanth.
Rohit, who retired from T20 internationals after leading India to their second World Cup title in June, has recently struggled with form and acknowledged his leadership shortcomings following India’s 3-0 home series defeat to New Zealand.
India heads to Australia needing to secure four wins out of five tests to reach their third consecutive World Test Championship final next year. However, Rohit might miss the opening match in Perth on Nov. 22 due to personal reasons.
“You have to think about the future. If Rohit Sharma doesn’t perform well, he might consider retiring from test cricket himself,” Srikkanth commented on his YouTube channel. “He may focus on ODIs only, having already stepped away from T20Is. We have to remember he’s also getting older.”
Rohit has accumulated 4,270 runs in test cricket with an average of 42.27, but his recent form has raised concerns.
In his last 10 innings, he has managed just one half-century, with six single-digit scores, and was criticized for playing careless shots at crucial moments against New Zealand.
Srikkanth, a former chief selector, also commended Rohit for owning up to his mistakes in a press conference.
“Credit to Rohit for admitting he didn’t play or captain well throughout the series. That’s commendable,” Srikkanth said. “Acknowledging one’s faults is key to improvement. It shows he’s on the path to recovery, in my view.”
