RAWALPINDI: In a vibrant celebration of Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day, the Rising Stars Hockey Club hosted a spirited exhibition match at Shehnaz Sheikh Hockey Stadium, where Rising Stars White triumphed over Rising Stars Green with a 3-1 scoreline.
The Independence Day Hockey Cup wasn’t just about goals and tackles—it was a showcase of sportsmanship, diplomacy, and inclusivity, bringing together young athletes, diplomats, and female hockey players on the same field.
The event saw the participation of foreign dignitaries, adding an international flavor to the festivities. Australian High Commissioner Neil Hawkins played for Rising Stars Green, while Brunei’s High Commissioner Kamal Ahmed donned the jersey of Rising Stars White. Their involvement was met with great enthusiasm from the crowd and highlighted the powerful role of sports diplomacy in strengthening international ties.
The match kicked off with an aggressive start by Rising Stars Green, but White soon gained control, scoring midway through the first half. Despite a valiant comeback attempt by Green—including a successful penalty corner—Rising Stars White sealed the win with two additional goals.
A notable highlight of the event was the participation of girls from the Rising Stars Girls Hockey Academy, who played alongside senior athletes. Their energetic display earned praise from spectators and dignitaries alike, reinforcing the club’s commitment to women’s inclusion in sports.
The match concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, attended by both high commissioners and Deputy Head of Mission of the Romanian Embassy, Eduard Preda. In their remarks, the diplomats applauded the club for organizing such a meaningful and inclusive celebration.
“This was more than just a match; it was an occasion to celebrate Pakistan’s independence, promote hockey, and build bridges of friendship,” said Kamal Ahmed.
