Rising Pakistan: Agreements Signed for Key Projects to Improve Freight Movement

Pakistan’s New Freight Corridor Project Aims to Boost Regional Trade

ISLAMABAD: A high-level delegation from DP World (UAE), led by Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group CEO of DP World and Chairman of Ports, visited Pakistan to finalize various commercial aspects of the designated freight corridor project (from Karachi Port to Pipri) under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) platform.

The visit focused on consultations with stakeholders regarding the multi-modal logistics park in Pipri, which included representatives from DP World, Pakistan Railways, and the National Logistics Cell (NLC). These discussions successfully culminated in the signing of a mutually agreed term sheet for project implementation at an event held at the SIFC on January 10, 2025.

Pakistan’s delegation was represented by Syed Mazhar Ali Shah, Secretary of Pakistan Railways, in the presence of SIFC’s Director General. The delegation also included senior officials from NLC and other relevant ministries and departments.

The project aims to reduce the movement of freight vehicles through the use of efficient railway infrastructure in Karachi, enhancing the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of domestic freight services. The initiative seeks to turn Pakistan into a regional hub for transshipment and transit trade, leveraging multi-million-dollar investments to operationalize the country’s envisioned multi-modal logistics framework.

The framework agreement, signed in January 2024, has facilitated the timely execution of the project through the collective efforts of SIFC and key stakeholders. This initiative marks the beginning of long-term strategic cooperation with DP World to unlock Pakistan’s potential in regional trade and connectivity, addressing the current lack of efficient port and rail infrastructure.
