Islamabad – Mudassar Iqbal:Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, addressed the 23rd SCO Heads of Government Council Meeting in Islamabad, emphasizing regional stability, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange.

“We stand at a pivotal moment in history, where tectonic shifts are taking place in the social, political, economic, and security spheres,” PM Shehbaz said. “But from the SCO platform, we have the resolve and determination to forge a brighter, more prosperous, and secure future.”

Pakistan assumed the SCO chairmanship last year, prioritizing regional peace, interconnectivity, sustainable development, and socio-cultural initiatives. The Joint Communiqué reflected the shared vision of sustainable economic growth, green development, environmental protection, and socio-cultural ties.

The prime minister proposed implementing SCO concepts through Plans of Action, strengthening economic and trade cooperation. He welcomed decisions on energy cooperation and the Association of Investors.

A stable Afghanistan is crucial for regional connectivity and trade, PM Shehbaz emphasized. The international community must assist Afghanistan in preventing humanitarian crises and economic meltdown while ensuring its soil is not used for terrorism.

Economic collaboration is at the heart of SCO engagement, with regional infrastructure projects and economic integration vital. Pakistan advocates for a robust SCO connectivity framework, expanding projects like BRI, CPEC, and INSC.

Combating poverty and climate change are essential. Pakistan will continue leading SCO efforts to address poverty and supports environmental cooperation among Member-States.

The country values people-to-people connections and cultural exchanges among Member-States. By promoting mutual understanding and respect, Pakistan aims to build lasting cooperation.

PM Shehbaz concluded, “Pakistan strongly believes that a strengthened and effective SCO can spearhead sustainable development in the region.”
