Real Madrid Seeks Super League Costs From Six
Six English Clubs Face Claims Over Failed European Super League Costs
ISLAMABAD: (Sports Desk) – Real Madrid is seeking contributions from six Premier League clubs towards the costs of establishing the failed European Super League, the Spanish club confirmed to Reuters on Tuesday.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are the six English clubs being asked to contribute. According to The Athletic, the total expenses could reach €80 million ($89.9 million).
The six clubs were among nine teams that withdrew from the proposed competition within three days of its launch in April 2021, following widespread opposition from supporters, football authorities and other stakeholders.
Real Madrid said the English clubs were liable for costs associated with setting up the competition. These expenses have so far been covered by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus. However, the Spanish club did not immediately clarify whether it was also seeking contributions from the other three early withdrawals: AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.
Tottenham declined to comment on the matter, while Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
The Athletic reported that the clubs had signed a shareholders’ agreement for the European Super League Company, the holding company established to run the project. However, it remains unclear whether the agreement explicitly requires the withdrawing clubs to cover the initial setup costs.
The European Super League collapsed shortly after its launch in 2021, when nine of its 12 founding clubs withdrew amid intense backlash. Juventus later abandoned the project, while Barcelona formally withdrew in February, leaving Real Madrid as the only remaining founding club.
On February 11, Real Madrid, UEFA and European Football Clubs announced an agreement on principles aimed at resolving legal disputes connected to the Super League project.
