Rana Sanaullah Says Imran Khan’s Release Possible If He Apologizes for May 9 Riots

November 24-26 PTI march also criticised by Sanaullah.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, has stated that Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), could be released if he offers a “wholehearted apology” for the violent events of May 9, 2023. The riots, which erupted following Khan’s arrest in a corruption case, saw military installations across the country being vandalized.

Speaking on Geo News’ program “Jirga,” Sanaullah emphasized that Khan’s actions had pushed the country into a political deadlock, as he believed a revolution could be sparked by his actions. However, Sanaullah made it clear that such methods would not lead to success. He referred to the PTI’s efforts in November 2024, when the party marched toward Islamabad, stating, “No, there are no chances of a revolution. Only political struggles will lead to victory here.”

When asked about the possibility of Khan’s release, Sanaullah suggested that an apology over the events of May 9 might open the door for negotiations. “If he apologizes over May 9, then talks can proceed, or maybe we can talk,” he said.

Sanaullah’s remarks follow an earlier statement where he indicated that the government would not oppose the court’s decision if it chose to release Khan, who has been imprisoned in Adiala Jail for over a year on various charges.

The PTI, which had previously reached a stalemate in negotiations with the ruling coalition, has been seeking the support of opposition parties for a movement aimed at restoring the rule of law and securing the release of political prisoners in Pakistan.

Sanaullah’s comments come at a time of increasing political tension, which is expected to fuel further polarization across the country.
