Punjab to expand fibre optic network provincewide
Fibre expansion plan aims to modernize Punjab’s digital services
Lahore (Web Desk) — The Punjab Government has announced plans to accelerate the expansion of the fibre optic network across Lahore and other cities in the province.
Officials stated that recommendations have been finalized to eliminate right-of-way fees for fixed-line operators, a move aimed at promoting digital connectivity and reducing the cost of high-speed internet services. Approval will be sought from the Punjab Cabinet to waive charges for laying optic fibre cables.
The initiative is expected to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas, encourage investment in fiber-to-the-home projects, and enhance digital services, e-governance, and online education.

Currently, only 16 percent of towers in Punjab are fiberized, and the government has committed to filling this gap. Plans are also underway to connect government offices to a single high-speed digital network, enabling full digitization of files and records.
The initiative will allow citizens to pay fees, taxes, and fines via mobile phones and cards, linking at least 15 different sectors to the digital payment system. The project aims to reduce repeated office visits, administrative delays, and instances of bribery.
The recommendations were proposed by the Punjab Department of Local Government and Community Development, highlighting the government’s commitment to a modern, efficient, and citizen-friendly digital infrastructure.
