Punjab police launch operation against ‘fugitive PTI workers’ in anticipation of Lahore rally.
Authorities are conducting searches at the homes of additional PTI officials in the district.
Islamabad-On Friday, Punjab police arrested several “fugitive supporters of PTI” in anticipation of an upcoming rally in Lahore, having previously announced their intention to detain around 4,000 individuals connected to the incidents of May 9.
The arrests occurred during a corner meeting in Gulberg, Lahore, where police conducted a raid. This led to clashes between law enforcement and PTI supporters, who retaliated by throwing stones. In response, police resorted to aerial firing to disperse the crowd.
More than 20 PTI workers were subsequently taken into custody and transported to the police station in a prisoner van. The arrests sparked outrage among supporters, prompting protesters to block the Mini Market road and ignite tires in protest.
In a coordinated effort, sources within the Punjab government disclosed that a plan is in place to apprehend approximately 3,700 suspects and proclaimed offenders linked to the events of May 9. This crackdown underscores the government’s determination to maintain order ahead of the rally, as tensions remain high in the region amid ongoing political unrest.
The Lahore police have gathered data on these wanted individuals using Safe City cameras and have established special teams tasked with identifying and arresting them.
Police have arrested four individuals in Vehari, including Rana Mohsin Munhas, the district president of the Insaf Students Federation. They have been taken to the district jail for a 30-day detention.
Sources indicate that authorities are also carrying out raids on the residences of other PTI leaders in the district.
