Punjab Local Government Elections to Be Held in December: ECP

ECP will conduct the elections under the Local Government Act of 2022.

ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced its final verdict regarding the delay in local government elections in Punjab, confirming that the polls will be held in the last week of December 2025.

According to the decision, the ECP will conduct the elections under the Local Government Act of 2022. The verdict was issued by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja along with Commission members Nisar Durrani, Shah Muhammad Jatoi, and Babar Hassan Bharwana. The Commission has also directed that the delimitation process in Punjab should begin immediately from tomorrow.

During the hearing, the ECP was informed that Punjab’s local government laws have been amended five times, with a sixth amendment currently underway. Despite this, the Commission maintained that elections can proceed under the existing 2022 legislation.

The ECP criticized the Punjab government’s conduct, describing it as delaying and contrary to constitutional obligations. It emphasized that the local government elections will be held under the current law, regardless of the provincial government’s inconsistent legislative approach.

It is worth noting that a few days ago, the Lahore High Court, in response to a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami, summoned the Advocate General and Chief Secretary of Punjab over the delay in holding local government elections.
