Punjab Launches Free Transport Beautification and AI Projects

Punjab Government Rolls Out Free Transport, Cleanliness, and AI Measures

LAHORE: (Web Desk) – The Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a meeting in Lahore on Tuesday, announcing a series of initiatives aimed at public welfare, urban beautification, and improved governance across the province.

A key decision is the introduction of free public transport in 17 districts that currently lack adequate services, with pilot programs approved in Gujranwala, Multan, and Sialkot. Authorities will also review transport fares per kilometer to ensure affordability.

The meeting reviewed the impact of rising oil prices on transport fares and discussed price control measures for essential goods. Officials highlighted that Punjab enjoys lower prices for flour, pulses, fruits, and vegetables compared to other provinces, with ample stocks available. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz ordered strict action against hoarding and directed PERA to regulate LPG rates provincewide.

Public safety was another priority. The Chief Minister expressed concern over deaths in open drains and instructed assistant commissioners to survey drains and ponds in every street. Commissioners are required to submit daily reports and photos, with unsafe drains being considered a failure of district authorities.

Urban development and beautification projects across Punjab were reviewed, including Ichhra Bazaar in Lahore, Rahim Yar Khan, and Faisalabad. Maryam Nawaz expressed satisfaction over completed improvements, such as the removal of roadside drainage and electric wires in Ghanta Ghar Faisalabad, while highlighting the need for similar quality work in other districts.

Cleanliness initiatives were emphasized under the Suthra Punjab programme. Maryam Nawaz issued a two-week deadline for improved sanitation and ordered the restart of cemetery cleanliness campaigns. Digital mapping and AI-based monitoring systems have been introduced for real-time supervision of workers, alongside the pilot project of AI-based waste detection vehicles. The “Suthra Punjab Hero” initiative will strengthen the AI complaint helpline for public engagement.

The Chief Minister also stressed tree plantation, dog bite prevention, street lighting, zebra crossings, green belts, and overall urban KPIs to ensure a cleaner, safer, and more organized Punjab by June.
