Punjab Implements Plastic Ban on World Environment Day

Sharif stressed the importance of reducing fossil fuel usage and increasing reliance on renewable energy sources

LAHORE, Punjab takes a bold step towards environmental conservation as it officially prohibits the use, production, sale, and trade of plastic within the province, effective today.

Marking World Environment Day, Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, highlighted the global challenge of environmental pollution and urged collective action to address it. She emphasized the harmful impact of plastic on the environment and human health, vowing strict enforcement of the plastic ban policy.

Under the new regulations, plastic bags will be banned in hotels, restaurants, and eateries, with a concerted effort to raise awareness about eco-friendly alternatives like cotton bags. Additionally, a special awareness campaign is set to educate the public about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution.

Sharif stressed the importance of reducing fossil fuel usage and increasing reliance on renewable energy sources. Recognizing deforestation as a significant contributor to environmental degradation, she emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to preserve natural ecosystems.

Highlighting alarming statistics about environmental degradation, Sharif warned of the dire consequences, including widespread droughts by 2050 if immediate action is not taken. She commended the Punjab government’s proactive measures and called on everyone to play their part in securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
