Director General of the Food Authority, Asim Javed, emphasized the need for stricter penalties and fines to deter offenders exploiting legal loopholes.
LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced sweeping amendments to the Food Authority Rules, targeting the rampant issue of food adulteration across the province. Under the revised laws, adulteration will now be classified as a non-bailable offence, reflecting a firm stance against compromised food safety standards.
Director General of the Food Authority, Asim Javed, emphasized the need for stricter penalties and fines to deter offenders exploiting legal loopholes. He highlighted concerns over the persistence of the adulteration mafia, which has evaded justice despite numerous legal actions.
In the period spanning January 2023 to June 2024, 1023 cases have been filed against adulterers, with a staggering 850 cases still pending in police stations and courts. Only 78 convictions have been secured during this time, underscoring the urgency for tougher legislative measures.
The amendments aim to overhaul existing regulations, ensuring robust enforcement and eliminating adulteration practices that jeopardize public health and trust in food safety standards.
