Punjab govt proposes measures to tackle energy crisis

Punjab plans school closures and fuel rationing amid energy crisis

LAHORE: (Web Desk) – The Punjab Government has begun preparing measures to address the ongoing energy crisis, with the Punjab Energy Department submitting several key recommendations.

Among the proposals, fuel rationing is recommended to follow the federal model, potentially introducing coupons or a digital system to ensure fair distribution of petrol and diesel.

The department has also suggested extending the closure of educational institutions across the province until April 15. Plans to introduce a hybrid education system for schools are under consideration to maintain learning during disruptions.

Private institutions may be required to adopt strict work-from-home guidelines. Market operating hours are proposed to be further limited, with LED billboards and decorative lights turned off, and streetlights operating on alternate mode after 10:00 pm. Non-essential events could face a complete ban.

To support public transport and reduce energy usage, the department recommended increasing services for the Orange Line Train and the Metro Bus system.

These measures aim to reduce electricity consumption while maintaining essential services and public convenience amid the worsening energy situation in Punjab.
