Punjab Government Issues Emergency Alert for Lahore Residents

Precautionary Measures Recommended Due to Smog

The Punjab government has issued an emergency alert for Lahore due to hazardous air quality resulting from smog originating in Delhi, Amritsar, and Chandigarh.

Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has advised citizens to take precautions, such as wearing masks and keeping windows and doors shut, as strong winds bring pollution from neighboring areas.

Minister Aurangzeb noted that the air quality index (AQI) in Lahore significantly improved from 800 to 191 yesterday as the winds subsided. However, she cautioned that children and those with heart and respiratory issues should limit outdoor exposure.

The environment minister highlighted that the burning of crop residues in regions of India has exacerbated the pollution problem. She reiterated that the strong winds have a considerable impact on Lahore’s air quality, worsening an already critical situation.

In light of the deteriorating conditions, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has urged all residents to wear masks. To protect children, school hours have been adjusted to 8:45 AM.

Parents and school management are encouraged to follow safety protocols, ensuring children wear masks while attending school. Aurangzeb emphasized the importance of this measure for the health of young students and advised parents against sending their children to school without adequate protection.

Residents are also encouraged to report any environmental pollution violations to Citizen 1373 to assist in tackling the rising pollution levels in the region.
