Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Unveils Sanitation Fleet, Pledges Progress

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday reaffirmed her commitment to the province’s development and vowed to address critics of Punjab’s progress. Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of a new sanitation fleet under the “Suthra Punjab” initiative, she described participating in the event as an honour and wearing the programme’s jacket as a source of pride.

Paying tribute to the workforce behind the campaign, CM Maryam saluted those involved, calling them heroes for their ongoing efforts to improve sanitation across both urban and rural areas of Punjab. She praised the government and administration for their teamwork during recent floods, noting that relief activities in affected regions had been commendable.

The “Suthra Punjab” programme now boasts a workforce of 150,000 workers and a modern fleet of 35,000 machines, with each vehicle proudly bearing the name of its district. Maryam Nawaz highlighted that within just one year, a state-of-the-art sanitation fleet had been established across all districts of Punjab. She emphasized that prior to this initiative, there had been no effective sanitation arrangements in the province, and the launch of the programme has brought much-needed relief to the people.

In addition to the ongoing sanitation efforts, the chief minister mentioned a special campaign launched during Eid-ul-Adha, which included the acquisition of advanced machinery for cleaning canals and drains. These efforts, she said, are expected to mitigate flood risks in the future.

Criticizing previous administrations, Maryam Nawaz singled out the “Gogi-Pinky era” for bringing destruction and leaving behind piles of waste in Punjab. She stressed that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership had laid down an extensive network of development projects across the country, focusing on education, health, and transport as fundamental rights for the people.

She also announced a merit-based scholarship programme aimed at supporting higher education for young people in Punjab. Expressing her responsibility as Punjab’s chief minister, Maryam Nawaz said it was her duty to champion the province’s progress and development.

Looking beyond Punjab, she expressed her hope that other provinces—Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Sindh—would achieve cleanliness levels comparable to Punjab’s current standards. She also highlighted a significant drop in crime rates since her government took office, noting that 25 districts in Punjab now report zero crime.

In conclusion, CM Maryam Nawaz reiterated her commitment to safeguarding the rights of Punjab’s people and fostering development, with aspirations to see similar progress across all provinces. The unveiling of the new sanitation fleet marks a major milestone in the “Suthra Punjab” campaign, underlining the government’s dedication to a zero-waste future for the province.
