Punjab Calls in Army for SCO Security and Law Enforcement

Following Islamabad’s lead, the Punjab government has also requested the assistance of the Pakistan Army to help maintain peace and order throughout the province, particularly during the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference.

A formal notification outlining the rules for the army’s deployment has been issued.

This decision was made during a meeting of Punjab’s Special Committee for Law and Order, which approved the army’s involvement to ensure security during the event and manage law and order in key cities. Copies of the notification have been sent to the General Headquarters (GHQ) and all Corps Headquarters in Punjab, confirming the army’s role in supporting the civil armed forces and police.

According to the notification, Pakistan Army troops will provide security for foreign delegations attending the SCO conference and will assist civil armed forces and police. The army will be stationed at strategic locations across Punjab, including airports, travel routes of foreign delegations, and their accommodations. The exact deployment locations will be determined by local army commanders in consultation with police authorities. In case of emergencies, army personnel will have the authority to open fire if necessary.

In addition to securing the SCO conference, the army will also be deployed in Lahore, Attock, and Rawalpindi to maintain law and order. A notification issued by the Punjab Home Department states that the army may be called upon to ensure security in Attock and Rawalpindi in light of the SCO event.

The Punjab Home Department emphasized that Pakistan Army personnel would have the authority to take emergency action, including the use of firearms when necessary.

The deployment is set to begin immediately, with army personnel taking up positions across the province.
