Punjab Announces Winter Vacations for Schools: Break to Begin on December 20

During this period, no academic activities will take place, providing families with a chance to spend quality time together.

LAHORE: The government of Punjab has officially announced winter vacations for all schools across the province, offering students a much-needed break just in time for the colder months. In a statement released on Monday, Secretary of Schools Punjab, Khalid Nazir Wattoo, confirmed that schools will be closed for a 20-day winter holiday, starting from December 20, 2024, and lasting until January 10, 2025.

The winter break, which applies to both public and private educational institutions, comes as the region braces for the winter chill, allowing students and teachers alike to recharge ahead of the new year. During this period, no academic activities will take place, providing families with a chance to spend quality time together.

Court Directs Schools to Arrange Transport for Students

In a separate but significant development, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed schools in Punjab to arrange transport for students after the winter vacation period, in an effort to address the rising pollution levels in the region. Justice Shahid Karim issued the ruling following petitions filed by citizens concerned about the worsening smog crisis.

The LHC’s three-page judgment mandates that schools collaborate with the School Education Department to ensure transport facilities are available for students. The initiative is designed to reduce the number of private vehicles on the roads, which are a major contributor to the region’s air pollution.

The court has warned that schools failing to comply with the transport mandate will face immediate closure. The provision of dedicated transport is part of broader efforts by the Punjab government to tackle the ongoing smog issue and safeguard public health.

With winter vacations and improved transport arrangements on the horizon, families across Punjab can look forward to a safer, more enjoyable holiday season.
