PTI Seeks JUI-F Support for Grand Opposition Alliance
PTI's Alliance Efforts Face Setbacks Amid Political Crisis
PESHAWAR: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, revealed on Wednesday that efforts are underway to convince Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to join the grand opposition alliance.
Speaking to Geo News, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader expressed optimism that Fazl would soon become part of the opposition bloc. He added that negotiations with the JUI-F leader are ongoing to finalize the alliance.
Since PTI founder Imran Khan’s imprisonment in August 2023, the party has struggled politically, with its efforts to form a unified opposition alliance facing hurdles. However, PTI has expedited its efforts to launch an anti-government movement after Eid ul Fitr, as per Imran Khan’s directives.
Despite this, internal discord within PTI and mixed signals from party leadership have slowed the progress of the alliance. PTI leader Asad Qaiser had earlier mentioned ongoing talks with JUI-F, with hopes of a national agenda following Fazl’s return from abroad. However, KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s confrontational remarks against Fazl have complicated efforts, drawing objections from JUI-F over PTI’s sincerity in forming alliances.

In addition, PTI’s previous attempts to build opposition alliances, such as the Tehreek-i-Tahaffuz-i-Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) and efforts to include ex-premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, have had mixed results. TTAP leaders recently gathered to discuss the ongoing political crisis, blaming the “rigged” February 8, 2024, general elections for the current political turmoil in Pakistan.
The opposition continues to call for the reversal of constitutional amendments and the restoration of the rule of law in the country.
