PTI Protest at Liaquat Bagh: Security Tightened, Mobile Services Suspended

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has called for a protest at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi today, prompting authorities to seal off the area. In preparation for the protest, mobile networks and metro bus services will be suspended, with additional disruptions anticipated across the city.

Despite the PTI’s intentions, the local administration has not granted permission for the event. In response to this decision, PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram stated that the party would proceed with the protest at Liaquat Bagh even without official approval.

In a related move, the Punjab government has invoked Section 144 across the Rawalpindi Division for two days, prohibiting political gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, and protests. This ban is in effect on Saturday, September 28, and Sunday, September 29, impacting the districts of Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, and Chakwal.

A heavy police presence has been deployed both inside and around Liaquat Bagh to prevent individuals from entering for recreational purposes.

Reports indicate that mobile services will be cut off throughout Rawalpindi today, and a public holiday is expected to be announced. Key motorways, including M1 and M2, will be closed, with routes from Chakri, Bahatar, Taxila, and AWT also blocked.

Metro bus services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi are expected to be halted, and Murree Road may be obstructed by containers.

In light of these developments, the PTI has formulated a plan for the protest, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chief Minister, Ali Amin Gandapur, set to lead the demonstration.

PTI leaders are expected to arrive in convoys, with instructions for party workers to gather at Liaquat Bagh by 2 PM. To strengthen security, six companies of Rangers will be deployed in Rawalpindi and Attock amid concerns about potential unrest involving armed groups.

The Punjab Home Department has officially issued a notification enforcing Section 144, restricting public gatherings and protests. In addition, a formal request has been sent to the federal government for the deployment of Rangers to maintain law and order.

At the same time, Rawalpindi’s City Police Officer, Syed Khalid Hamdani, has instructed the cancellation of all officer leaves, emphasizing that non-compliance with this directive will lead to dismissal. This measure is part of heightened security efforts to ensure that law enforcement personnel are available in full force during the period of unrest and potential protests.

The enforcement of Section 144 and the deployment of Rangers are aimed at preventing any breaches of security or public order as tensions rise ahead of the planned protest by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Authorities are taking strict measures to ensure the situation remains under control during this period.
