PTI-Govt Talks: Negotiation Committee Set to Meet Imran Khan at Adiala Jail

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) negotiation committee is scheduled to meet party founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan at Adiala Jail today, Sunday, January 12. The meeting aims to break the deadlock in the ongoing talks between the government and opposition, which have been marked by political tensions.

Sources confirm that the negotiation committee members are expected to arrive at the jail around 2 PM to engage in discussions with Imran Khan. Meanwhile, members of the opposition’s negotiation committee are anticipated to reach the venue between 2:30 PM and 4:00 PM. The meeting will focus on outlining the future course of action for the negotiation process.

Imran Khan is expected to provide direction to the PTI committee, which had earlier proposed holding the third round of government-opposition negotiations either on Sunday or Monday, January 13. This proposal was made following National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq’s statement that neither party had contacted him to arrange the meeting.

PTI’s negotiation committee spokesperson, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, confirmed that the opposition’s committee is prepared for the third round of talks. He noted that the discussions would be crucial in moving the dialogue forward.

The first round of negotiations took place on December 23, 2024, with both sides expressing a commitment to continue talks. The meeting, chaired by Speaker Sadiq, lasted around two hours and was marked by a positive tone, as both the government and opposition committees pledged to maintain goodwill and use Parliament as a key platform to resolve national issues.

The PTI-led opposition committee had presented an initial outline of demands, which it is expected to formalize in writing at today’s meeting. These demands are expected to guide the next phase of negotiations.

The session will also feature a moment of reflection, with a recitation of Fatiha for the martyrs of the war on terrorism, underscoring the importance of national unity during these challenging times.
