PTI Chairman Gohar Apologizes for Journalist Assault Outside Adiala Jail
Imran chose Gohar for the trusted position of acting Chairman of the PTI in 2023.
ISLAMABAD: In the current political turbulence faced by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the party’s chairman, stands out as a rare figure who could potentially unlock political space and opportunities for both the party and its incarcerated founder, Imran Khan — but only if empowered to do so.
Party insiders and observers familiar with behind-the-scenes developments describe Gohar as a cool-headed, soft-spoken, and non-confrontational leader who commands unusual respect across political and institutional circles. His professionalism, clean image, and measured tone have made him an acceptable figure even to stakeholders traditionally unwilling to engage with PTI.
A Bridge-Building Chairman in a Divided Landscape
At a time when PTI’s confrontational politics has led to near-total isolation from the political mainstream and institutional corridors, Barrister Gohar is seen as someone who could serve as a bridge between PTI and the establishment — including the civil and military leadership.
According to senior party officials, Gohar’s measured and diplomatic demeanor contrasts sharply with other party figures known for fiery speeches and confrontational stances. He has consistently avoided inflammatory rhetoric, which has made his image more acceptable within key state institutions. This was especially evident when even Imran Khan confirmed Gohar’s meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, a rare acknowledgment in PTI circles.
Loyalty Questioned, But Never Broken
Despite his growing stature, Gohar has not been spared from internal criticism. PTI’s aggressive social media cells and overseas chapters have at times labeled him a “Ghaddar” (traitor) — accusing him of being too soft or too accommodating. However, senior party insiders defend his loyalty to Imran Khan, calling it unwavering.
“He has taken every step in consultation with Imran Khan. His loyalty has never been in doubt,” said a party official close to the leadership. Yet, this same loyalty is what constrains Gohar’s ability to act independently.
The Khan Factor: Authority Without Autonomy
Despite being appointed acting chairman in 2023, Barrister Gohar still lacks the authority to take unilateral political decisions. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, from behind the bars of Adiala Jail, continues to exert total control over PTI’s strategic direction.
Gohar visits the jail regularly to consult Imran on party matters — ranging from election strategies to dialogue initiatives. Party insiders say no decision is final without Khan’s approval, and that even key bodies like the Core Committee and the Political Committee are largely ceremonial, lacking decision-making power.
This has become particularly evident on matters such as potential dialogue with the government, outreach to the establishment, and party restructuring. On all such issues, Gohar is forced to act more as a messenger than a decision-maker.
Missed Opportunities Amid Political Stalemate
Several political observers believe that Gohar represents PTI’s best hope for political reintegration and institutional dialogue. His opposition to anti-army campaigns — frequently run by PTI’s overseas chapters and digital teams — has been consistent and clear. He has advocated for political dialogue and de-escalation, even when the broader party strategy leaned towards confrontation.
Yet, his efforts have repeatedly hit a wall due to his limited mandate. “He can only deliver results if he is empowered by Imran Khan to lead on the political front,” a senior PTI source told reporters. “Without that trust and authority, Gohar cannot play the role many expect of him.”
Can PTI Evolve?
With Pakistan heading toward critical political crossroads, PTI faces a choice: continue down the confrontational path that has led to isolation, or embrace a more strategic, dialogue-driven approach. Barrister Gohar could be the man to lead the latter — but only if he is given the autonomy to do so.

For now, PTI remains centralized around Imran Khan, with Gohar operating under his shadow. Whether this dynamic shifts in the near future may determine the party’s relevance and survival in Pakistan’s evolving political landscape.
