PTI Calls for Nationwide Protest Against 26th Constitutional Amendment
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has declared its intention to hold a nationwide protest on Friday (tomorrow) in reaction to the government’s plan to introduce the 26th amendment to the constitution.
This decision was made during a meeting of the PTI political committee in Islamabad, where party leaders expressed strong opposition to the proposed constitutional changes. In a statement released after the meeting, the PTI clearly rejected the government’s plan to modify the constitution. The party called for demonstrations throughout the country after Friday prayers, encouraging members and supporters to take to the streets.
During the meeting, the PTI also discussed its strategy for the upcoming National Assembly session, deciding that only central leaders would attend while other members would abstain. Opposition leader Omar Ayub indicated he would only participate in a special parliamentary party meeting after consulting Maulana Fazlur Rehman about the proposed amendments.
Additionally, the PTI political committee condemned the treatment of the party’s founder, Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail. The party voiced strong discontent regarding Khan’s conditions and demanded immediate access for his lawyers, family members, and party leaders.
Previously, the PTI had planned a protest for October 15 at Islamabad’s D-Chowk but postponed it after much discussion due to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit taking place in the city. The recent decision for the protest was made based on the majority opinions within the PTI political committee, with sources revealing that PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan had discussed the government’s proposal during the committee meeting.
