PTI Announces Sheikh Waqas Akram for PAC, Marwat Denounces

Another name for the Public Accounts Committee chairman has come to the fore from the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Islamabad: PTI Announces Sheikh Waqas Akram for PAC, Marwat Denounces . The PTI has decided to name Sheikh Waqas Akram as its nominee for the all-important chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committe. PTI spokesperson Rauf Hassan says that the name will be announced after further consultation with the party leadership.

Reacting to the development, Akram posted on his X account that he was grateful to PTI founder chairman Imran Khan, and party leadership for nominating him in light of Khan’s instructions.

He further claimed the PTI was being targeted for political revenge right now, adding that despite this, history will always remember those who stood up for true freedom and the rule of law.

It should be noted that the PTI had earlier named Sher Afzal Marwat as the chairman of the PAC while at one point Sahibzada Hamid Raza of the Sunni Ittehad Council was also suggested for the slot.

Late in April, SIC members Zain Qureshi, Marwat, and Hamid Raza met with the National Assembly speaker and discussed issues related to the formation of parliamentary committees in the meeting. Sources said the opposition suggested the name of Hamid Raza to the speaker for the chairman PAC.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq told the opposition lawmakers that the office-bearer would be elected as per the rules. “I want the parliamentary committees to resolve the issue through understanding,” he told the members.

Earlier, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, while talking to the media on April 30, said that the name of Sher Afzal Marwat had been finalized for the PAC chairman.

Controversy brews as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat labelled the nomination of Shiekh Waqas Akram as Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman as a “fraud” perpetrated against the public trust.

Expressing his discontent on X (formerly Twitter), Marwat asserted that neither PTI Founder Imran Khan nor the decision-making bodies within the party’s top brass had consulted him or sought his input regarding the appointment.

He emphasised that the decision to appoint Akram did not reflect any changes in the initial stance of the party leadership.

“I will meet him tomorrow and inform him about the fraud in his name. I was not informed about the meeting of the committee nor was there any such thing on its agenda,” Marwat declared, underscoring his exclusion from the decision-making process.

Marwat, known for his vocal stance on matters of governance and party affairs, reiterated the importance of transparency and democratic principles within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), emphasising that the party should not be subjected to arbitrary decisions akin to a “Rajwara” (monarchy). He vowed to take necessary steps to prevent any attempts to “hijack” the party’s democratic processes.
