PTA warns telecoms over hidden charges, unauthorized deductions

PTA orders telecom operators to stop secret deductions and improve transparency

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strict warning to telecom companies over unauthorized deductions and hidden charges on customer accounts. The regulator emphasized that any changes to mobile tariffs require prior approval, and no user should be enrolled in value-added services (VAS) without explicit consent.

PTA urged operators to prioritize infrastructure investment and service upgrades rather than imposing unexplained fees on subscribers. The move comes after repeated complaints from users nationwide about disappearing balances and automatic subscriptions.

To protect consumers, the PTA encouraged users to report grievances through official channels and its helpline. “Consumer rights will not be compromised,” the authority stated.

In a major consumer-friendly step, calls to toll-free numbers starting with 0800 will now be free for all mobile users. Previously, only fixed-line customers enjoyed free access, while mobile users were charged standard rates. This change followed consultations with industry stakeholders, including the Pakistan Telecommunication Company and National Telecommunication Corporation.

Despite these efforts, reports of unauthorized deductions persist. Some users claim daily charges of Rs70–Rs80 are being withdrawn for services they never requested, leading to rapid depletion of mobile balances. Viral social media posts have highlighted cases where multiple services were secretly activated on basic phone numbers, sparking public outrage.

Critics demand greater transparency from telecom operators and insist on explicit user consent before activating paid services. The PTA confirmed it is closely monitoring compliance and working with providers to reinforce consumer protection measures. Telecom companies face mounting pressure to restore trust and prevent unauthorized deductions.
