PTA Expects Internet Disruptions to End by October’s Conclusion

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that the current internet disruptions in the country are anticipated to be resolved by the end of October.

PTA Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rahman spoke to the media, assuring that the authority does not plan to further hinder internet services.

Rahman mentioned that there has been a 93% compliance rate among social media platforms, with the exception of X (formerly Twitter), which is only complying with 27% of regulations at present.

He clarified that decisions regarding the closure of X are made by the federal government, and the service will be reinstated at the government’s request.

The chairman highlighted the differences in internet shutdowns, noting that India had 116 shutdowns in 2023, whereas Pakistan had only seven.

He stressed that while he does not advocate for internet shutdowns, national security remains a top priority.

Rahman clarified that mobile services are selectively suspended during critical times, such as on Muharram 10, and pointed out that mobile data is currently blocked in Panjgur due to security issues.

He also expressed his encouragement for social media platforms to employ artificial intelligence to tackle illegal content and emphasized the necessity for improved telecommunications infrastructure.

Rahman noted that Pakistan’s spectrum availability is considerably lower than that of India and announced plans for a 5G auction in April of next year, which is anticipated to improve service quality nationwide.
