Provinces push back on national lockdown plan as federal government urges unity and shared responsibility
A plan to roll out a nationwide smart lockdown hit a roadblock after provinces pushed back during a high-level national meeting held in Islamabad, chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari.
Sources revealed that the meeting explored the idea of enforcing smart lockdowns across the country, but provincial governments were not on board and resisted applying the measure at a national scale.
Those present at the meeting agreed to step up austerity efforts and make sure energy and fuel-saving measures are properly followed through, sources added.
The federal government also called on provinces to chip in for the Rs254 billion relief package, underlining the importance of working together to tackle the challenges the country is currently facing.
A sub-committee comprising provincial finance ministers was formed during the meeting to reassess proposals related to smart lockdowns. The committee is scheduled to meet today to review the recommendations.

The sources said the forum agreed that coordinated efforts between the centre and provinces would be essential in navigating the situation, while prioritising economic stability and resource management.
