Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Accepts Invitation to CHOGM

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accepted an invitation from King Charles III to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa next month. This marks a significant moment, as it will be King Charles’s first summit as Head of the Commonwealth since his accession to the throne.

The invitation was extended during a phone call from the British monarch on Monday. During their conversation, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed gratitude for the invitation and acknowledged the importance of the upcoming meeting. He emphasized that the summit would serve as a crucial platform for discussing pressing global issues that affect Commonwealth member nations.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to the Commonwealth and the principles outlined in its Charter. He also highlighted the need for enhanced cooperation among Commonwealth countries on vital topics, including sustainable development, democratic governance, and youth empowerment.

The leaders discussed shared concerns, particularly regarding climate change—an issue that King Charles has long advocated for. PM Shehbaz expressed Pakistan’s eagerness to participate in climate discussions, pointing out the country’s significant vulnerability to the effects of climate change.

In a personal exchange, PM Shehbaz inquired about King Charles’s health and extended best wishes to Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales, who has recently completed medical treatment.

The two leaders also reminisced about King Charles’s last visit to Pakistan during his time as Prince of Wales, with PM Shehbaz expressing hope that the King would visit Pakistan again in the near future.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa is scheduled for next month, where leaders from the 56-member association will convene to tackle global challenges and strengthen collaboration within the Commonwealth.
