NANGARHAR, AFGHANISTAN – Eastern Afghanistan was struck by a devastating earthquake on the night of August 31, 2025, resulting in massive destruction and a rapidly rising death toll.
The powerful 6.0 magnitude quake hit the mountainous provinces of Nangarhar and Kunar, reducing numerous villages to rubble. Initial reports indicate a catastrophic human cost, with over 600 people confirmed dead and more than 1,300 injured. Officials fear the number of casualties is likely to increase significantly as rescue efforts continue.
The remote and difficult terrain of the affected areas is severely hampering rescue and relief operations. Destroyed infrastructure and blocked mountain roads have made it challenging for aid teams to reach survivors. Several villages are reported to be completely destroyed, and dozens of people are still feared trapped under the debris.

Afghan authorities, alongside international rescue agencies, are racing against time to provide emergency assistance. Hospitals in the region have been placed on high alert and are working to provide urgent medical care to the influx of wounded.
Seismologists noted that the earthquake’s epicenter was close to the eastern mountain range and near populated villages, which contributed to the widespread devastation.
