Power Tariffs Set to Rise as CPPA Seeks Fee

The CPPA has submitted an application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra)

ISLAMABAD: The federal government is set to impose an additional financial burden on electricity consumers as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has moved to recover a market operation fee through power tariffs.

According to officials, the CPPA has submitted an application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), seeking approval to charge a market operation fee of Rs9 per unit. Nepra has scheduled a hearing on the request for December 23.

Sources said that if approved, the proposed fee would be included in electricity tariffs and passed on to consumers through their monthly power bills. The charge would apply across all distribution companies in line with the approved tariff structure.

Officials added that once Nepra grants approval, power distribution companies would be legally bound to pay the fee, effectively transferring the cost to end users. The development comes at a time when electricity consumers are already facing rising energy costs and inflationary pressures.
