PML-N’s Ayaz Sadiq elected as National Assembly Speaker

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of PML-N and PPP’s joint candidate elected as National Assembly Speaker.
Islamabad: Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, a joint candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has been re-elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly.
The session for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly is underway under the chairmanship of Raja Pervez Ashraf.
After the polling, Raja Pervez Ashraf announced that Sardar Ayaz Sadiq secured 199 votes to be elected as Speaker, while his opponent, Malik Muhammad Amir Dogar of the Sunni Ittehad Council, received 91 votes.
After being elected as Speaker, Ayaz Sadiq went to Malik Amir Dogar’s seat and shook hands with him. He also shook hands with Hameed Reza and Omar Ayub Khan, while Yousaf Raza Gilani enthusiastically hugged Ayaz Sadiq and congratulated him.
Prior to the election of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Raja Pervez Ashraf briefed the members present in the House about the election procedure, after which Barrister Gohar from the Sunni Ittehad Council and Omar Ayub expressed their views on the point of order, stating that the election cannot be held until the House is complete.
When PML-N’s National Assembly member Rana Tanveer started expressing his views, members of the Sunni Ittehad Council started making noise, prompting the Speaker to say that when you were talking, everyone listened silently, so you should also listen to others silently.
Later, Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf initiated the process of electing the Speaker, stating that you yourselves have gone to the Election Commission, the Election Commission is the forum for elections, not the National Assembly.

For the Speaker’s election, Ayaz Sadiq, a joint candidate of the PML-N and the PPP, while Amir Dogar, a candidate of the Sunni Ittehad Council, was elected through secret balloting.
After the election of the Speaker, voting will be held for the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, with PML-N and PPP’s joint candidates Ghulam Mustafa Shah being the candidate.
It is pertinent to mention that in the first session of the 19th National Assembly, 302 out of 336 members of the House took the oath.
