PM Shehbaz Urges Increased Local Edible Oil Production to Reduce Import Dependency

The meeting centered on initiatives to strengthen agricultural growth and ensure national food security.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday emphasized the importance of accelerating efforts to boost the local production of edible oil, aiming to reduce the country’s dependency on imports.

During a meeting to evaluate the performance of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research and to discuss strategies for agricultural growth, PM Shehbaz stressed the government’s commitment to enhancing local food production. He urged authorities to take urgent steps to address the challenges related to edible oil imports.

The meeting centered on initiatives to strengthen agricultural growth and ensure national food security. PM Shehbaz acknowledged the vital role of innovation in the sector and called for involving young agricultural researchers from across the country to introduce fresh ideas and expertise.

In a bid to maintain agricultural standards, the Prime Minister ordered a crackdown on companies selling substandard seeds and directed authorities to improve the reliability of agricultural inputs.

Additionally, PM Shehbaz called on the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) to activate its research activities to advance agricultural innovations. He also stressed the importance of modernizing farming practices through nationwide mechanization.

The closure of the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) was also discussed, with efforts to expedite the necessary processes for its completion.

The meeting further addressed plans to increase agricultural exports and the progress of establishing the National Agri-Trade and Food Safety Authority, which is nearing completion.

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, along with other senior officials, attended the session, reaffirming a collective commitment to bolstering Pakistan’s agricultural sector and ensuring food security.
