ISLAMABAD: (Staff Reporter) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the relevant authorities to accelerate the implementation of reforms in the health sector and ensure better medical facilities for citizens.
The prime minister chaired a meeting in Islamabad on Wednesday concerning the Ministry of National Health Services and the fire incident at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), shortly after returning from his visit to Kyrgyzstan.
During the meeting, officials briefed Shehbaz Sharif on the overall state of the health sector, with particular attention given to the ongoing investigation into the PIMS fire.
The meeting was informed that decisions taken by the prime minister were being implemented in light of findings contained in the interim investigation report.
No Leniency for Criminal Negligence
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made it clear that officials found responsible for criminal negligence would face strict action.
He directed the authorities to improve healthcare services at PIMS and ensure that all required fire safety and other protective measures are fully implemented.
The prime minister also instructed the health minister and health secretary to personally monitor the situation at the hospital.
Under his directives, Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal and Health Secretary Retired Captain Muhammad Mahmood will ensure their presence at PIMS on alternate days and supervise measures aimed at improving the hospital’s facilities and operations.
Shehbaz Sharif stressed that the authorities must ensure effective implementation of the decisions rather than limiting the response to administrative instructions.
Officials Attend Meeting
Minister for Health Syed Mustafa Kamal, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Health Secretary Retired Captain Muhammad Mahmood, and PIMS Executive Director Dr Muhammad Salman attended the meeting.
The prime minister reiterated the government’s focus on strengthening healthcare services and ensuring greater accountability and safety at public-sector hospitals.
