PM Shehbaz Meets Biden: A Step Towards Closer US-Pakistan Relations
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended a dinner hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden in honor of global leaders. This meeting took place during the final stage of Sharif’s tour of the United States, where he also participated in the UN General Assembly session in New York and engaged in significant discussions with international leaders.
During their meeting, Sharif and Biden exchanged cordial greetings and talked about topics of mutual interest. The dinner was attended by several other world leaders as well.
After concluding his engagements in the U.S., Prime Minister Sharif returned to London, arriving at Luton Airport. He is scheduled to spend four days in London, where he will meet with key British politicians and business leaders.
Before his trip to the U.S., Sharif had flown from London to New York on September 23. While in the U.S., he delivered a speech at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on various global and regional challenges. He also had discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other prominent figures.

During his address at the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif opened by reciting verses from the Holy Quran. He denounced the ongoing violence in Gaza, referring to it as a “great tragedy” where Palestinian children are being buried alive and their homes are being set ablaze.
“The world is witnessing this cruelty,” he stated, asserting that simple condemnation is insufficient. He urged for immediate global intervention to stop Israel’s attacks.
Shifting focus to South Asia, the Prime Minister drew attention to the persistent human rights violations in Indian-administered Kashmir. He called upon the international community to address the humanitarian crisis in the region, where he claimed the Indian Army continues to perpetrate atrocities against the Kashmiri population.
“Illegal occupation creates a fresh hell every day, in the killing fields of Palestine and in occupied Jammu and Kashmir… Can we ignore the mothers cradling the lifeless bodies of their children? This is not merely a conflict; it is a systematic slaughter of innocent individuals, an assault on the very essence of human life and dignity. The blood of Gaza’s children stains not only the hands of the oppressors but also those who are complicit in prolonging this brutal conflict,” he proclaimed to the assembly.

Reflecting on the challenges of climate change, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recounted the devastating floods that struck Pakistan two years ago, resulting in damages estimated at $30 billion. He emphasized that despite Pakistan contributing less than 1% of global carbon emissions, the country has borne a disproportionate burden for issues beyond its control.
PM Sharif acknowledged the tough decisions made to revitalize the economy, which, while temporarily difficult for the populace, have begun to yield positive results. He highlighted that inflation has now fallen to single-digit levels, marking a significant achievement given the current economic landscape.
Addressing the issue of terrorism, PM Sharif underscored the necessity for the Afghan government to take firm action against terrorist groups and prevent cross-border terrorism. He urged the Afghan interim government to align with international standards regarding human rights, particularly those of women and girls, and to ensure political inclusion. Additionally, he called for effective measures to dismantle all terrorist groups operating within Afghanistan, especially those responsible for cross-border attacks on neighboring countries.
