PM Shehbaz launches new Chinese-backed economic zone

PM Shehbaz inaugurates a Chinese-backed economic zone, promoting trade, industry, and regional cooperation with Bangladesh.

ISLAMABAD—(Special-Correspondent/Web Desk)—Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday inaugurated a Chinese-led Special Economic Zone, expected to attract $100 million in investment over five years and generate $400 million in exports. The zone is being developed by Challenge Fashion Private Limited, which has invested $17 million in Pakistan since 2014.

The PM welcomed the project, emphasizing technology transfer, skill development, and sustainable industrial growth. He instructed officials to provide full support, highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to the industrial goals of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Strengthening Pakistan-Bangladesh Ties
In a separate meeting, PM Shehbaz called for stronger political and economic relations with Bangladesh. During talks with Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Md Iqbal Hussain Khan, he expressed satisfaction with growing bilateral engagement and trade, emphasizing people-to-people connections.

Government Sector Reviews
The prime minister also met ministers to review key sectors. Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari discussed power-related issues, while Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik focused on petroleum matters. Minister Hanif Abbasi reviewed ongoing and future railway projects, ensuring alignment with national development goals.

Technology Park Project Delays
Earlier, PM Shehbaz visited Islamabad’s under-construction Technology Park. Expressing strong displeasure at slow progress, he instructed officials to accelerate work and ensure world-class facilities, originally scheduled for completion on March 23.

The PM’s engagements underline Pakistan’s commitment to economic growth, regional cooperation, and infrastructure development.
