ISLAMABAD (Web Desk)– Shehbaz Sharif has announced a series of relief measures aimed at protecting low- and middle-income groups from the impact of rising fuel prices. The initiatives include fuel subsidies for motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers, reduced government spending, restrictions on official vehicle use, and the launch of a digital relief system.
The steps come in response to soaring global oil prices linked to tensions involving Iran, which have placed additional financial pressure on households across Pakistan.
In recent weeks, the government has also introduced strict austerity measures to reduce fuel consumption, including cuts in development spending and limits on non-essential expenditures.
During a high-level review meeting, officials said the government is working with provincial authorities to accelerate the registration of motorcycle and rickshaw owners so they can benefit from subsidized fuel schemes. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, this process is being fast-tracked to ensure timely relief.
Earlier, the government had announced a targeted fuel subsidy program for two- and three-wheeler users. Reaffirming his stance, the prime minister stated that economically vulnerable segments of society will not be left unsupported during the ongoing crisis.
The meeting also highlighted significant cost-cutting measures within the government, including reductions in development budgets and a 60% decrease in the use of official vehicles. Savings from these steps will be redirected toward public relief through a digital distribution system instead of increasing fuel prices.
Shehbaz Sharif noted that these proactive measures have helped maintain uninterrupted fuel supplies across the country, preventing disruption despite global uncertainty. He also emphasized Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote peace in the Middle East.

Officials reviewed fuel conservation strategies, petroleum reserves, and future planning. An audit report by the Intelligence Bureau confirmed that the austerity measures are being implemented effectively and that fuel reserves remain sufficient for current and near-term needs.
Authorities also clarified that while high-octane fuel prices for larger vehicles have increased, jet fuel prices remain unchanged. In addition, medical supply reserves are reported to be adequate to meet national healthcare demands.
