Farmers stage protest at Lahore’s Charing Cross, The Mall

Islamabad: PKRC demands arrest of accused involved in wheat scandal. Pakistan Kissan Rabta Committee staged a protest at Charing Cross, The Mall wherein women farmers also participated in the demonstration against the delay of wheat procurement by the Punjab government.

The protesters raised slogans against the government and stated if the wheat purchase did not start soon, they would surround the Punjab Chief Minister’s House.

The farmers demanded Punjab government start purchasing wheat from farmers at the earliest and without any delay. Farmers also demanded the government arrest the accused involved in the wheat scandal.

In April, several farmers, including two well-known leaders, were arrested over protest against delay in purchase of wheat in the Punjab province.

Farmers’ body hosted a sit-in protest led by Vice President Sabir Niaz Kombuh’s farmers alliance, Kisan Ittehad outside Punjab Assembly.

Punjab Kisan Board Chairman Mian Abdul Rashid, has also been detained in Lahore by the police.

The protest is a reaction to the Punjab government’s failure to initiate wheat procurement. Farmers from various cities have poured into Lahore. In preparation for the demonstration, the police have assembled several prisoner vans.
