Petrol, diesel prices expected to increase from March 1

Fuel prices in Pakistan likely to rise from March 1 as global oil markets react to ongoing US-Iran nuclear talks.

Islamabad – (Web Desk) – Petroleum prices in Pakistan are expected to increase from March 1 because fuel rates are rising in the international market, sources said on Friday.

Reports suggest that petrol may go up by Rs4.58 per liter, while high-speed diesel (HSD) could rise by Rs4.73 per liter. Kerosene is also likely to become more expensive by Rs6.88 per liter, and light diesel oil may increase by Rs5 per liter.

Earlier, on February 15, the federal government had already increased petrol and HSD prices by Rs5 and Rs7.32 per liter. After that hike, petrol is currently priced at Rs258.17 per liter, while diesel is being sold at Rs275.7 per liter.

At the same time, global oil prices jumped nearly 3% on Friday. Traders are worried about possible supply problems after nuclear talks between the United States and Iran were extended.

Brent crude rose by $2.09, or about 3%, reaching $72.84 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude increased by $2.33, or around 3.6%, to $67.54 per barrel. Both benchmarks are at their highest levels since July and August and are set to record weekly gains.

Oil analyst Tamas Varga from brokerage PVM said uncertainty and fear are pushing prices higher. He explained that the market is mainly reacting to the outcome of the Iran nuclear talks and the possibility of US military action.

The United States and Iran held indirect talks in Geneva on Thursday after US President Donald Trump ordered a military buildup in the region. During the discussions, oil prices briefly rose on reports that talks had stalled over US demands that Iran stop uranium enrichment.

However, prices eased slightly after an Omani mediator said some progress had been made.
