PCB Begins Search for New Head Coach

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially kicked off its search for a new permanent head coach, posting a formal advertisement on its website on Saturday. The board is seeking a Level III qualified coach with at least 10 years of experience coaching national or domestic cricket teams, signaling a fresh start for the national side’s leadership.

This move comes as former interim head coach Aqib Javed, according to reports, is no longer interested in continuing in the head coach role. Instead, Javed is reportedly eyeing the position of Director of the High-Performance Centre, a post left vacant after Nadeem Khan’s resignation. The PCB has also advertised this role, indicating a possible reshuffle within the coaching setup.Javed was initially appointed as interim white-ball head coach in November last year after Gary Kirsten stepped down just before Pakistan toured Australia. He was later promoted to all-format interim head coach following Jason Gillespie’s departure due to differences with the board. Javed’s interim tenure was set to conclude with the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 but was extended for the national team’s white-ball tour of New Zealand, which ended earlier this month.

However, the PCB has now decided not to grant another extension to Javed. Despite this, he may remain involved in Pakistan cricket if appointed as Director of the High-Performance Centre.

Sources suggest the PCB is facing a shortage of suitable candidates among former national cricketers and is leaning towards hiring a foreign coach. Unlike previous years, the board is not expected to pursue high-profile international names, focusing instead on finding the right fit for the team’s current needs.
